Keyloggers in the workplace

Kevin talked about the cat and mouse between keylogging software and anti-virus software on the latest ITT. He talked about how embarrassing it might be when your user gets an AV warning about the keylogger you put on the computer to track him/her. Here’s the question I think some managers should think about before they even think about using a keylogger to make sure their employees are being productive.

In our firm, if I had to take a rough estimate, we would have to hire at least 2-3 people to do nothing but go through the keystroke logs of the other employees. We might end up spending more time and money to track employees than they were wasting surfing to begin with!

At the end of the day, some basic accounting principles apply. The technology might be cool and high-tech, but that doesn’t mean it’s worth your while to deploy it.
