What To Say About Metadata?

I’ve been working on an outline for a presentation I’m going to be doing to some records management folks later this month. I’m planning on helping them grasp some of the technical aspects of ediscovery, metadata, forensics, etc. I’ll probably do some hands-on with file recovery tools, Md5 hashes, and how copying or moving a file can impact the metadata, along with some general information about what metadata is and what it means.

I’ll probably also talk a bit about ediscovery from the cloud and social networks as well, without getting into the legal questions that are still sort of getting sorted out, since I’m not a lawyer.

My question for you, dear reader, is what else should I be thinking about? If you are, or know people in records management, what should they know, or what do they have questions about? I’d love to get some more ideas for areas to cover, so if you have any suggestions, leave a comment!

Linked: Where Did Our Lunch Breaks Go?

My point in describing these things is not to brag about how much work I do, or how many teams I interact with, but to point out that it’s easy to find your time and energy completely blocked and scheduled for you. Fighting burn out means protecting, and sometimes fighting for, your free time, including a lunch break.

Employers who are interested in not burning out their employees would do well to recognize that as well. As the article below points out, remote working gives us all a lot more flexibility to take breaks, and then do some of our work on our own schedule, since we no longer have to commute, or be in a location, but that doesn’t mean you work all day, and then also into the night.

Breaks matter. Balance matters. Remote work is a great way to find your own level of flexibility, and to provide it to your employees. I suggest you figure that out.

  • Linked – Why public chats are better than direct messages

But, here it the real world, this doesn’t always work out very well. You really need the culture to be one where everyone is used to working asynchronously and checking the public channel for chances to help out the team. It sounds like that is both the expectation and the reality at this company but for a lot of us the reality is very different. Posting something in a public channel where no one gets a notification that a message is being posted generally means no one sees it. So we go back to using private channels or tagging people in the public channel in order so that we purposefully interrupt them. We haven’t developed a culture where asynchronous communication works and I suspect it’s because we don’t really want it. We want people to respond to us now. We don’t trust them to get back later and, to be fair, we don’t give our peers reason to trust us because we spend all of our time putting out fires and frequently forget to get back to people.

In many cases, it’s a humblebrag. “Oh I saw your message but then I got involved in important things because I’m an important person and never got back to you”.
