Utilities I’ve used in the past week

Things have been crazy, crazy busy, but in the midst of it all, it occurred to me that instead of trying to piece together some coherent thoughts from my addled brain, I’d share a few utilities I’ve found ever so useful in the last few days.

Diskdigger:

DiskDigger can recover files from any type of media that your computer can read. This includes USB flash drives, memory cards (SD, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, etc), and of course your hard drive. The types of files that it recovers include photos, videos, music, documents, and many other formats.

PstPassword:

PstPassword is a small utility that recover lost password of Outlook .PST (Personal Folders) file.

WordPress for iPhone: self-explanatory, really.

Malware Bytes: -anti-malware tool

I won’t get into the details of why I needed to use these this past week, just know that I did use each of these, and they worked as advertised!

TechDirt has a good example that should show you what is at stake with net neutrality rules. For about $12, Sprint will soon let subscribers buy a wireless plan that only connects to Facebook. For that same price, they could choose instead to connect only with Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest—or for $10 more, enjoy unlimited…

    Tumblr

Recently, a friend contacted my wife and I asking about good places to start a blog. The request reminded me that while I had seen many articles talking about the success of Tumblr as a blogging platform and a community, I really hadn’t spent any time trying to figure out what the appeal is. So,…

Maybe I use it too much?

So today, with the weather having been miserably cold, and about to get even worse, I was just looking for an excuse to leave the house for more than the 15 minutes we spent taking photos yesterday. Since I got a Best Buy gift card for Christmas and hadn’t found anything to really do with…

Tinder Using Video Selfies to Verify User Identities Because of AI Selfies

Of course, the problem is that short videos are going to be easy enough to create using AI as well, so what will be the next step dating apps have to take to verify the identity of their users and make sure customers aren’t spending all their time on the app talking to fake AI-generated profiles? Or is this the end of that entire business model?

Don’t think dating apps are the only thing at risk with AI. Any online service based on contributions by authors, artists, musicians, etc., is at risk of being overrun by AI junk. In some cases, it’s probably already happening.

Conduct Computer Forensics without a proper license: Go to Jail?

At least that’s what the rule is now in the State of Michigan. I agree with the commentary at the end of the article. Commentary: It is disappointing that the Michigan legislature does not require licensed professional investigators to be certified in computer forensics before they can provide computer forensic services. The law raises considerable…

  1. I used PstPassword just last week, actually. I hadn't used it before and couldn't understand how it worked, but it did so I wasn't going to question it. I actually keep a flash drive on me at all times with all sorts of portable apps, including several things from NirSoft and just about everything from Sysinternals.
