New site for helpdeskers

Ian Landsman gave me a head’s up this afternoon to a new site he’s created, helpdesktalk.com. In his words:

HelpDeskTalk.com is a new site dedicated to the help desk community. I created this site because there’s simply a lack of help desk focused forums available. The best we currently have are IT forums that will occasionally have a help desk topic or two. This forum is a place to call our own and I hope will serve as a great resource for our community over the coming years.

I think it’s a great idea. It’s brand new, so there’s not much discussion going on yet, but I definitely plan on being involved in it, and maybe trying to get my coworkers involved as well.

  • This made me laugh

From a link at PC Doctor, under the heading of Email annoyances, I followed along to this post and laughed especially hard at this one: “The 18-line sig about all the Bad Things that will happen to me if I ever reveal the contents of your privileged, confidential (and unencrypted) message” As any law-firm IT…

  • Major issues down..

It’s 10AM and between putting in 4 hours yesterday and two so far today, all of the major issues left over from my vacation have been dealt with. My boss’ hard drive has been replaced and the software installations finished (except for the accounting package, she has always done that one herself) , the receptionist’s…

  • MyDoom

Yesterday I was out, took a vacation day rather than dealing with the snow. Today I’m being buried in a different way, under MyDoom emails coming into our accounts. Someone that we deal with quite a lot has gotten bit by this thing big time! I guess it’s time to figure out who. Follow these…

  • More tech woes

Yesterday was almost an entire day trudging through the world of faulty DNS records, broken telephone cords, unexplained inability to dial outside, which just as suddenly started working again, a lost internet connection that kept me from updating our website database, and various other semi-emergencies. I was so busy putting out fires that when 3PM…

  • What’s possible?

Saw this posted on Scoble’s link blog this morning, a post from Ernie the Attorney, titled Productivity with Technology: Figuring out what’s possible is the hard part about how simply not knowing what you can do with your technology is an obstacle to increased productivity. I’ve seen many similar situations in my office where people,…

  • Bad Media?

My attempt to install Red Hat 8.0 did not go as planned. While the iso downloaded OK, and the MD5 Checksum matched, apparently the CD I burned for Disk 1 was bad. After a number of attempts to install either hung or spit back an error about being unable to read such and such, I…

  1. Very interesting Mike. Thanks for the link. I’ll be bookmarking this one too, and hopefully contribute something meaningful to the conversation.

  2. Thanks guys! Your support is greatly appreciated. As Mike notes, things are light right now (hey I just turned it live this morning!). Forum sites are really hard to get started so this early support is really important.

  3. I think this is the guy who writes some helpdesk software – it looked pretty impressive when I saw the screenshots so hopefully it will be a good resource and not just a plug for his software 🙂
I’ll be keeping an eye on it too.
