Follow ups

Lots of discussion about this post from yesterday going on around various places. Notably Geek News Central and Joy.

To follow up Joy’s point, she’s right. I’m not going to sit here and tell you one version of software is better hands down, because it’s all relative. MS stuff is better for me in my situation because it introduces fewer problems with users. If I could encompass my whole professional philosophy in one thought it would be this:

“Your PC is a tool to help you do your job, whatever the job may be. The measure of any tool is whether you can do what you need to do with it. If you can, with minimal complications, it’s the right tool. If it’s not, you need a different tool.”

That part of IT should be simple, the trickier part is anticipating what tool you’re going to need 3 years from now!

It looks like I’m going to be meeting with someone who runs a website for a small not for profit lobbying group next week so that she can pick my brain about blogging. I’ve already given her a bunch of links and a few articles about blogging, but I figured I’d throw it open to…

Just had the telephone vendor out to do some analog line installs. Our graphic designer asked my wife about what we were doing to the phone line in his office. She told him we were putting in a modem line now, so if the T1 connection ever goes down he’ll be able to get a…

  • Inexpensive HTML editors?

So Angela’s work is looking to purchase an inexpensive Windows based HTML editor. They suggested FrontPage, after deciding that Dreamweaver was probably too expensive for them. She’s not the worlds biggest Frontpage fan, (neither am I), so she’s looking for some alternatives that’ll be cheaper, or the same in price as Frontpage, but still be…

This is the result of spending my time on the hunt for a missing laptop from our laptop pool while my manager gets Photoshop happy. Who says we don’t have a good time down in the IS Department? And yes, as soon as I saw it I told him that was so totally going on-line…

  • SpamCop

I was taking a look at my email using Mailwasher last night, and I noticed that the blacklist from SpamCop marked just about every email out there as spam. Even the mails from mailing lists that I belong to! Nothing like having to go through and unmark every email from the bloggerpro list, among others….
